Jordan- Standards body, EU launch twinning project

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Feb. 21, (Petra)-The European Union (EU) and Jordan Institution for Standards and Metrology (JISM) celebrated Wednesday launch of the twining project aimed to support implementation of harmonized legislation with EU counterparts in the areas of product safety, conformity assessment, market survey and accreditation.

The EU-funded project aims to prepare Jordan to negotiate mutual recognition of the Agreement on Conformity Assessment and Acceptance of Industrial Products (ACAA), which will facilitate joint trade in the priority sectors.

The 18-month project also aims to support Jordan's standards body to prepare for the ACAA in selected priority products, such as electrical and gas goods.

To achieve this bid, EU experts will therefore develop national capacities in these key sectors.

The twinning project, dubbed "Supporting Preparation for the Negotiation of the ACAA, " is being implemented by a German, Austrian and Swedish consortium under the supervision of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation and the European Union Commission in Jordan.

During the launch ceremony, Minister of Industry and Trade, Yarub Al-Qudah, said Jordan and the EU intend to launch a comprehensive free trade area aimed to allow gradual economic integration in the European Single Market.

He added such a free trade area is a bid to improve the conditions of access to EU markets and the (ACAA) is a vital basis to enforce Jordanian laws congruous with EU legislation in the priority sectors aimed to facilitate the swift movement of goods.

In turn, the European Union Ambassador to Jordan, Andrea Matteo Fontana, said the EU was very proud of the long-term cooperation with Jordan Institution for Standards and Metrology (JISM).

The project contributes to facilitating bilateral trade by harmonizing and enforcing the EU legislation and will ensure Jordanian products meet the EU's expectations of quality, and thus become more attractive, an ambition needed to foster EU's trade relations with Jordan and to support the country's prosperity, the EU envoy explained.

Under the (ACAA), Jordanian producers will freely export their products to the EU without further measures or delay, in addition to EU's acceptance of conformity certificates issued by Jordan's competent authorities, which will help increase competitiveness of Jordanian products at the national, European and international levels in sectors that Jordan can increase its exports.

The project's services include offering advice to harmonize legislation, standard specifications, standardization and accreditation activities, market survey and testing laboratories at the Jordan Institution for Standards and Metrology (JISM) with EU regulations.

Training, seminars, workshops and field studies will be provided to assist the JISM meet requirements of the ACAA and to develop its inspection and market survey activities.
