Oman- 'PDO aims to be leading player in solar energy development in region'

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- petroleum Development Oman (PDO) aims to become a full-fledged energy company over the next few years positioning Oman as a leading centre of solar energy development in the region.

Inaugurating the Miraah Solar Project and the Visitor Centre, Raoul Restucci, managing director of PDO said, 'Oman is blessed with sun virtually every day of the year and has one of the highest solar energy densities in the world.

'Therefore, solar power represents an enormous opportunity for this country. I am confident the technology and expertise that we see before us today will help to position Oman as a leading centre of solar energy development in the region.'

He said that PDO is determined to play its part in this exciting journey for the country. 'Last year, we announced our intention to gradually transition into a full-fledged energy company. Miraah is a very tangible example of this commitment. We are combining this with other initiatives such as solar power generation for our headquarters. This will also feed into the national grid at peak times, establishing a 100MW Solar PV farm in our concession area at Amin and ensures measures to reduce gas flaring as well as explore new forms of renewable energy such as wind power.'

In taking full advantage of what renewable energy can offer Oman, Restucci said there is a need to draw on support and expertise in all areas. 'It is for this reason that PDO has recently joined forces with bodies such as The Research Council, National Field Research Centre for Environment Conservation (NFRC) and Riyada as well as institutions including Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat University and Sohar University to share best practices, work on problems and create a forum to generate new sustainable energy ideas.' He said that the renewable energy sector will drive growth in jobs too.

'As you can see there is considerable amount of work that is ongoing across many fronts but there is still much more to do if we are to realise our long-term sustainable energy ambitions for Oman,' Restucci said.
