Jordan- Tarawneh, Japanese envoy discuss fostering bilateral cooperation
(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Feb. 5 (Petra)-Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament, Atef Tarawneh, on Monday discussed with the Japanese ambassador here, Hidenao Yanagi, issues of mutual interest and ways to foster joint cooperation.
During the meeting, Tarawneh highlighted Jordan's strategy towards regional and global issues, especially inevitability of the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state on the Palestinian soil with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In this context, Tarawneh described Jordan's policy as " prudent" based on moderation, mutual respect, and non-interference in other countries' affairs.
The Palestinian cause has suffered injustice, last of which is the biased U.S. administration on Jerusalem, he underlined.
Jordan believes in peace and has signed a peace treaty. Israel doesn't respect its provisions. Jerusalem is still an occupied city. For us, East Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine and we express hope countries across the world back this stance, Tarwaneh added.
On the Syrian refugee crisis, he said Amman is battling to counter volatilities in the Middle East, which triggered dire economic repercussions on the Kingdom and urged the int'l community to support Jordan counter refugee-driven burdens.
The envoy, in turn, delivered a letter to Tarawneh from Japan's House of Councilors on joint parliamentary ties to best serve bilateral interests.
Yanagi also lauded the country's key role in addressing the consecutive waves of refugees, and especially the Syrian newcomers.
Despite difficult circumstances the Kingdom is battling, it is playing a crucial and distinguished role in the Middle East issues and has achieved prosperity and stability in a turbulent region, he added.
