Kuwait- US troubled by reports of mass graves in Myanmar

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Feb 1 (KUNA) -- The United State is "deeply troubled" by reports of multiple mass graves of Rohingya villagers uncovered in Myanmar, the State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said Thursday. The graves were uncovered in the Myanmar's Rakhine state, "the exact area where we have seen the Rohingya flee their country for neighboring Bangladesh," she said at a press briefing.

"We are watching this situation very carefully. We remain focused on helping to ensure the accountability for those responsible for human rights abuses and violations," Nauert stressed. Earlier, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the situation unfolding between Myanmar security forces and the Rohingya Muslim-minority constituted ethnic cleansing. "This is something we stand firmly by," she added. This week at least five mass graves were reportedly uncovered containing hundreds of bodies of Rohingya civilians believed to be killed by Myanmar forces.

Since August 2017, more than 655,000 Rohingya have fled what the UN called "textbook genocide" in Myanmar to neighbouring Bangladesh. (end) hy.gb
