Poland president denies Holocaust participation

(MENAFN) President of Poland Andrzej Duda says there was no institutionalized contribution by the country or its people in the Holocaust, but admits that individual Poles took "wicked" actions against Jewish neighbors.

He said on Monday that he would never permit his country and its people in general to be "vilified" though "false accusations".

The president appeared to be reacting to anger in Israel over a bill that would ban public statements directed to "the Polish nation" responsibility for crimes committed by Nazi Germany during its World War II Occupation of Poland.

In Israel, the legislation has been understood to be as an attempt to undermine scholarly research and deny facts about the Holocaust.
