Syrian dialogue conf. opens in Sochi
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Jan 29 (KUNA) -- The Syrian National Dialogue Congress kick-started in Sochi on Monday, with consultations for choosing a conference presidency council and setting up committees.
Over 1,300 representatives from Syrian factions, groups, trade unions and clans, together with independent figures, are participating in the meeting.
Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying that the gathering is a significant step towards a political settlement to the Syrian crisis.
The spokesman disparaged recent announcements that some opposition groups were reluctant to attend the event.
The aim of the meeting is to lay the foundation for a peaceful future for the war-torn country; the delegates are expected to begin work on a new constitution and discuss reconciliation in Syria. (end) as
