Jordan's UN envoy: Palestinian issue key to Middle East peace

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) New York, Jan. 25 (Petra) -- The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is the main threat to stability in the Middle East and resolving this issue is the key to regional peace and stability, said Jordan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sima Bahouth.

"The Palestinian issue is the core issue because it is the key to peace and stability in the Middle East and the failure to reach a just, comprehensive and lasting solution based on international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab peace initiative will lead to the continuation of tension and violence," she said addressing the UN Security Council.

On Jerusalem, the Jordanian envoy indicated that the international community agrees that Jerusalem is a final status issue that should be settled through negotiations and according to relevant international legitimacy resolutions.

Bahouth study pointed out that Jordan continues to shoulder its responsibilities towards the holy city and to engage the international community to confront any attempt to change the its legal or historical status or impose new facts on the ground in occupied Jerusalem.

She referred to King Abdullah II's assertion that Muslims and Christians have an eternal right in Jerusalem and should remain a city of peace for the followers of the three monotheistic religions.

The envoy warned tampering with Jerusalem's status is a grave provocation to the feelings of Muslims and Christians throughout the Arab and Muslim worlds.

Bahouth renewed Jordan's call for a collective and concerted international move to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on the two-state solution.
