Ethiopian opposition leader released from detention

(MENAFN) Authorities have released Ethiopian opposition leader Merera Gudina who spent over a year in custody.

The Oromo Federalist Conference leader was granted permission to return home after his discharge early Wednesday.

Gudina has been in custody since December 2016 for several charges that include having ties with terrorist groups.

His release came after the Ethiopian government declared on Monday its plan to drop charges against at least 500 suspects.
