Jordan, Turkey discuss cooperation to tackle tomatoes overabundance

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Jan. 16 (Petra)-Minister of Agriculture ,Khaled Hneifat, on Tuesday urged Turkey to accelerate implementation of joint agricultural agreements.

During talks with Turkish ambassador to Amman, Murat Karagoz, Hneifat said the government penned several accords with Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) to kick off agricultural projects in the Kingdom, to fund agri-product fairs across the country, and to launch dried-tomatoes factory this year at the governorate of Mafraq to handle this vegetable's surplus, triggered by Jordan's land border closure with Syria and Iraq.

Hneifat also stressed the importance of setting up "tangible" joint forestation and livestock ventures.

Karagoz, for his part, tabled an invitation to the minister to attend an agricultural exhibition slated to held beginning of February, with participation of Jordanian businessmen investing in this key sector.

The envoy also voiced keenness to push implementation of TIKA-executed agricultural projects in consultation with competent Ankara authorities.

On the tomatoes surplus, he pledged to discuss opening a Turkish gateway for Jordan to export overabundant tomatoes product, a bid that will help back the country's vital sector.
