(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Jan 15 (Petra) –– Anti-narcotics Department (AND) officers raided a laboratory in an East Amman industrial facility, which clandestinely manufactured drug pills, and arrested eight people in the first-of-its-kind case in the Kingdom, according to the Public Security Directorate.
The Department of Public Relations and Information at the directorate said that AND agents had for months been tracking information they had received about a person and other accomplices, who were preparing and processing materials, using special equipment, to produce the Captagon drug pills.
It said in a statement that special drug enforcement teams began surveillance and monitoring of the movements of the suspects to identify those involved and the locations of production and storage.
After the monitoring and information gathering, investigators have obtained preliminary information that one person had imported chemicals used to manufacture detergents and had sought help from foreign nationals to process these chemicals and extract substances to synthesize Captagon (fenethylline) pills, it said.
Having pinpointed the location of the narcotics-producing facility in a hangar in an East Amman industrial area, which was hired by the primary suspect, who claimed it was to produce cleaning materials, anti-drug teams moved in, seizing tons of various chemicals and industrial equipment used to make the pills and arresting the man, it said.
The statement added that other officers raided an apartment in Amman, which was used as a store, found about two million psychostimulant pills inside and apprehended one person.
Six other suspects, including a foreign national, were nabbed elsewhere, and an investigation was still going on, it said.
It pointed out that the narcotics seized were the first consignment produced and that the suspects had planned to smuggle them outside the country, adding that the chemicals confiscated were enough to make over 100 million drug pills.
