(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR: An agreement has been signed between the Ministry of Information Technology and Universal Service Fund for promoting information technology and providing fast internet service in FATA.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said while addressing the signing ceremony of the Broadband for Sustainable Development Projects in Islamabad on Friday that the purpose of the project was to develop telecom sector and spread it in all parts of the country. He said the government wants to provide internet services to remote parts of the country for their social and cultural development.

Under the agreement, broadband facility will be provided to Mohmand Agency, Khyber Agency and Dera Ismail Khan district with a cost of Rs3 billion. The project will benefit about four million people.

The 3G and 4G internet service is closed in FATA since 2016. The mobile phone and internet facility was first provided in FATA for the first time in 2005. However, the service had to be closed over law and order issues several times. The 3G and 4G service was restored in FATA in 2014, but it was suspended again.
