Man arrested in Riyadh after clip shows maid being harassed

A Saudi man was arrested on Wednesday after a video of him sexually harassing a foreign domestic worker went viral on Twitter.

The clip uploaded on Wednesday showed Salem Al-Zaharani harassing a domestic worker, whose nationality is unknown. Al-Zaharani was arrested by police in Riyadh a few hours after the video spurred outrage on social media, reported.

Netizens praised the police for their quick response to arrest Al-Zaharani. They also voiced anger and said the government should speed up the passing of a law against sexual harassment.

In September, King Salman has issued a royal decree to draft a law that criminalizes sexual harassment and enforces penalties.

According to , domestic workers in the Middle East are most vulnerable to sexual abuse. In the past few months, there have been several cases of Filipino domestic workers who were reportedly sexually assaulted and raped in the region.

Victims of abuse told HRW their abusers would become violent when they rejected their advances. The abusers also threatened to fire them or that they would lie to their wives to say the women seduced them.

Currently, there are about 2.4 million foreign domestic workers in the Middle East.
