Ukrainian World Congress thanks UN for supporting resolution on Crimea

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) The Ukrainian World Congress expresses gratitude to the United Nations for supporting the resolution "Situation of human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol (Ukraine)" and calls on all the member states to join it.

This was stated by President of the Ukrainian World Congress Eugene Czolij, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"The Ukrainian World Congress thanks the UN member states that supported Ukraine and its people with the adoption of this resolution and urges the withholding states to join in supporting this appeal fortheprotection of the fundamental human rights of civilians suffering the wrath of an occupier," Czolij said.

As reported, the UN General Assembly approved the resolution "Situation of human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol (Ukraine)" on 19 December 2017.

The document was supported by 70 UN member states. Another 76 member states abstained, and 26 countries more voted against the resolution.

The document, in particular, confirms there is an international armed conflict between Ukraine and Russia and condemns the retroactive application of Russia's own laws in the occupied territory. The resolution urges Russia to implement the interim decision of the UN International Court of Justice to restore the rights and freedoms of Ukrainian citizens on the peninsula; calls on the Russian occupation authorities to ensure the educational process in the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar languages.
