(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Unicef and the Omani government, represented by ministries and other government agencies, held their annual end of year review last week.
It was an all-day event highlighting the work they have done for 2017. The main objective was to review the achievements and challenges, and evaluate the effectiveness of the programme and see how they can improve next year, stated a press release.
During the review held at the Crowne Plaza Muscat, H E Dr Yahya bin Bader al Ma'wali, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Social Development, highlighted the sultanate's progress indicators for children, as a result of the collaboration between various governmental units in Oman and Unicef.
He said, '92.2 per cent of children who are in primary school had attended the first grade at the age of six. As for health services indicators, there was a reduction in infant mortality from 9.5 per cent to 9.2 per cent in the years 2015 and 2016, all due to the Ministry of Health's clear vision and obvious efforts in the matter and other aspects.'
H E Dr Ma'wali reiterated the sultanate's commitment to the Convention of the Rights of the Child, as well as the implementation of the Child Law.
Lana al Wreikat, Unicef representative said, "The Sultanate of Oman continues to work to promote the rights of the child and to achieve the goals of sustainable development for children. The achievements of Unicef programme with the government in 2017 alone speaks of that commitment; the implementation of the national nutrition survey, the results of which will be published in early 2018, and used as a basis for national nutrition planning as well as moving from the 'Child Friendly Schools' model to 'Child Friendly Education', just to name a few.'
She added, 'Unicef continues to work with the Government of Oman to support its commitments to the CRC and other rights body treaties, as well as to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also appreciates the joint efforts and the dedication of human, technical and material resources among the various governmental units in the sultanate to achieve the best results for children.'
The annual review meeting was attended by officials from the ministries of Social Development, Health, Education, Foreign Affairs, the Supreme Council for Planning, the National Centre for Statistics and Information, and the Omani Human Rights Commission in addition to the Unicef office in the sultanate.
