AMMAN —AlGhad— Jordan has filed for an appeal on the initial ruling of the International Criminal Court regarding the Kingdom's 'failure to apprehend Sudanese President Omar Bashir, during his visit in March, 2017, to attend the Arab League Summit held in Amman. The Court's initial ruling was that Jordan 'deliberately breached its duty to bring Bashir in for 'committing genocide in Darfur.
Moreover, the Court announced it will bring Jordan's charges before the member of the Rome Statute of the Court as well as the UN Security Council.
However, the foundation covenant of the Arab League, signed in 1953 by both Jordan and Sudan, gives Arab heads of state legal immunity.
Accordingly, legal experts reaffirm that Jordan is legally clear of any breach, despite the Kingdom's membership in the Rome Statute.
