Canada says Trump's decision on Jerusalem will not help peace prospects

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Ottawa, Dec 23 (Petra) –– Canada's foreign ministry said Saturday that US President Donald Trump's decision to move his country's embassy to Jerusalem would not enhance the aspired-for peace prospects in the Middle East. Spokesman Adam Austin said in a statement that Canada was disappointed with the decision, and that's why it abstained in a vote on the resolution at the UN General Assembly.

"Canada's longstanding position is that the status of Jerusalem can be resolved only as part of a general settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute", he said, adding that this is the policy of consecutive both liberal and conservative governments.

For his part, Canada's ambassador to the United Nations, Marc-Andre Blanchard, stressed the religious importance of Jerusalem to the three monotheistic religions, adding that Ottawa calls for calm and strongly condemns the targeting of civilians that was witnessed over the last weeks.
