The Ministry of Municipality and Environment in collaboration with Qatar University represented by the College of Engineering has launched a project to produce biogas from wastes that could be used as a clean energy to power the motor vehicles.
The project aims at studying and providing consultancy on the techniques for producing biogas from waste to use it in the vehicles powered by biofuel, said a report posted on the social site of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.
The launch ceremony was attended by Jamal Sharida Al Kaabi, Director of the Technical Office, Mohamad Ali Al Khori, Director of Public Parks Department at the Ministry and Dr Khalifa Nasser Al Khalifa Al Khalifa, Dean, College of Engineering.
'Phase one project will include a feasibility study for the project. The study will look into various aspects such as storing quantity of biogas from waste and compressing and purifying it. The biofuel would help to reduce the operation cost of vehicles, said Hamad Jassim Al Bahr, Director of Waste Management Department.
He said that the study also aims at converting these vehicles from diesel to biofuel and compressed gas produced by the solid waste management centre.
'An experimental study of the project was conducted by powering a vehicle with biogas produced from waste, said Al Bahr adding that another financial feasibility study was also conducted on how to invest and buy the units for compressing and management of natural gas and buying the units for converting the vehicles into biofuel.
He also said that the international green points will be collected and interpreted as the government is very serious for the protection of environment and investments in the sustainable environmental friendly technology. 'Then the work will begin on the expansion of the project that would lead to improve the results, he added.
