Kuwait- New Austrian gov't sworn in amid protests

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) VIENNA, Dec 18 (KUNA) -- Austria's new government on Monday was sworn in by the country's president Alexander Van der Bellen amid protests against the coalition cabinet.

The governments consists of the conservative People's Party (OVP) and anti-immigration Freedom Party (FPO), which was founded by former members of the Nazi party.

Thousands of protesters rallied in central Vienna against Austria's new coalition government of conservatives and far right, during its swearing-in.

There was reportedly a heavy police presence outside the Hofburg Palace during the swearing-in.

The Freedom Party (FPO) - the junior partner - is the only far-right party to get into power in the EU.

The Austrian president said OVP and FPO leaders Sebastian Kurz and Heinz-Christian Strache respectively had vowed to keep Austria stronger in Europe.

He urged the coalition to adopt a responsible policy, especially towards minorities. (end) amg.mt
