Turkish forces kill 39 PKK militants in week


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Dec 15 (KUNA) -- The Turkish security forces killed 39 PKK terrorists in south Turkey and north Iraq between December 8-14, the General Staff said in a statement on Friday.

A Turkish soldier was killed and another was wounded in the clashes with the PKK terrorists, Anadolu Agency reported, citing the statement.

The military operations took place in the southern cities of Diyarbakir, Mardin, Tunceli, Bitlis,Siirt, Sirnak and Batman, and northern Iraq.

During the operations, 27 improvised explosives were defused, 63 weapon emplacements, shelters, caves or depots were destroyed, and weapons and ammunition was seized.

More than 100 kilograms of narcotics, 100,000 packets of smuggled cigarettes and 3,000 liters of smuggled fuel, which are used as a source of income by the PKK were also seized, the statement added. Meanwhile, 8,892 people were arrested while trying to cross into Turkey unlawfully, according to the statement.

The PKK is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey as well as the US and the EU. (end) rs.gb
