(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ISTANBUL, Dec 13 (KUNA) -- The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Wednesday urged the international community to "recognize East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent Palestinian state." According to a bulletin issued after an urgent OIC summit in the wake of US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize the holy city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the Islamic bloc supports an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

"If the international community fails to take action, we are ready to refer this issue to the United Nations General Assembly," the statement read.

Leaders of Islamic nations gathered in Istanbul early Wednesday, including a Kuwaiti delegation headed by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, to examine the repercussions of Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the American embassy to the sacrosanct city.
