Afghanistan- New US envoy takes charge, vows expanded ties


(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday accepted credentials from the United States new ambassador to , John R. Bass, a former American envoy to Turkey and a career foreign service official.

The new American envoy presented his credentials to President Ghani at a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace, a statement from the palace said.

It quoted the new ambassador as assuring President Ghani of his efforts to further expand relations between the two countries.

Ghani wished success to Bass in his new assignment as the US ambassador in Kabul and thanked the US for its assistance with Afghanistan in diverse fields.

In a separate meeting with Afghan foreign minister Salahuddin Rabbani, the new US ambassador said the relationship between Washington and Kabul was strategic.

Bass said his country was committed to honoring its pledges with the war-torn country, a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul said.

US President Donald Trump appointed John R Bass as his new ambassador to Afghanistan in July. Bass was US ambassador to Turkey until Trump named him for the Afghan diplomatic mission and has worked as diplomat in various other countries since 1988.
