CAIRO, 10th December, 2017 (WAM) -- Arab foreign ministers late on Saturday rejected the US decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, saying President Trump's announcement was a "dangerous violation of international law."

Following an emergency meeting in Cairo on Saturday, the Arab League stressed that this shift in US policy is a dangerous development, which places the US in a position of bias in support of the occupation and violates international laws and resolutions. Thus, they said, the US has isolated itself as a mediator in the peace process. The ministers also urged the United States to abandon its decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital, saying the move would increase violence throughout the region.

"The decision has no legal effect.. it deepens tension, ignites anger and threatens to plunge region into more violence and chaos," the Arab League said in a statement.

The League went on to affirm its commitment to the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, in particular 465, 476, 478 and 2334, which affirm that any unilateral measures which aim to change the existing legal and historical situation in Jerusalem are deemed null and void.

It also reaffirmed its position which considers East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state, saying that security, stability and peace in the region will only be achieved with the establishment of a fully independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
