Palestinian protests over Trump's decision on Jerusalem persist

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Ramallah, Dec 9 (Petra) –– At least 90 Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli troops that continued on Saturday across the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip to protest against US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, according to Palestinian sources.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said its crews had dealt with 92 injuries since this morning until the evening hours during the protests in which Israeli forces fired live rounds, tear gas and rubber bullets on stone-throwing protesters. It said ten were injured by live fire on the fence between the Gaza Strip and Israel, where two protesters were killed and dozens injured by the Israelis on Friday.

In East Jerusalem, Israeli occupation forces and border police broke up a peaceful march in the heart of the city called for by activists via social networks to denounce Trump's announcement.

The Palestinian Fatah Movement said in a statement that Israeli forces and horse-mounted paramilitary border police charged into the crowd at Salaheddeen Street, just outside Jerusalem's walled Old City, assaulting the protesters and journalists and confiscating Palestinian flags.

Several suffered from gas inhalation as Israeli special units fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, it said, adding that Palestinian Legislative Council from Jerusalem, Jehad Abu Zneid, was arrested.

In the south of the West Bank, dozens of Palestinians were hurt in fierce clashes that erupted in the centre of Hebron in which Israeli troops fired tear gas and percussion bombs on stone-throwing protesters, the Red Crescent Society said. Reporters on the scene were assaulted by the Israelis, it added.
