Jordan, Russia cooperate in Small Modular Reactors


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Dec.9 (Petra) -- The Jordan Atomic energy Commission (JAEC) and the Russian State Rosatom Atomic Energy Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to study the possibility of exploiting the Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) produced by corporation for Jordan's peaceful nuclear program.

President of the JAEC Khaled Touqan, who signed the memorandum with Rosatom representative Yevgeny Bakermanov, Saturday said in a statement that the memo is part of the Kingdom's efforts to exploit the SMRs as a key factor in Jordan's nuclear strategy to generate electricity and desalinate drinking water, as well as other thermal and industrial applications.

The step, Touqan told Petra, comes as part of the Kingdom's strategic option to open new horizons to strengthen cooperation in nuclear energy sources to serve the national economy with added value .

Bakermanov said that Russia and Jordan have long been cooperating in the field nuclear technology, adding that the memo will boost this cooperation. Bakramanov expressed Rosatom's readiness to cooperate and provide its knowledge and experience in SMRs.
