(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Dec 8 (KUNA) -- The European Union (EU) and Jordan stressed Friday that the status of Jerusalem concerns the entire world and repeated their position of a two-state solution to resolve the Palestine question.
"What happens in Jerusalem and in particular what happens in the holy places is not only relevant for Muslims. This is not an issue just for the Muslim world. It is relevant for the entire world. The situation of Jerusalem is very dear to us," EU High Representative Federica Mogherin told a press conference after meeting Jordanian Minister for Foreign Affairs Ayman Al Safadi in Brussels today.
She expressed support to Jordan's role saying "Jordan has a key role and special role to play when it comes to the holy places (in Jerusalem) and it has the support of the entire international community." "Europe is firmly behind in supporting Jordan in its moderate, wise role in the region and in particular to preserve the status quo of the holy places," she said.
Mogherini said she spoke to Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser yesterday and expressed the EU's disagreement about the decision of the US administration on Jerusalem.
On his part, Al Safadi told the joint press conference that the EU is a reliable partner and added that "we are in a very, very difficult times that require immediate action and prevent a very bad situation from becoming worse." "Jerusalem is very sensitive to Arabs, Muslims and Christians and its importance is for the whole world," he stressed.
He said the US move to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is a "very dangerous decision which goes against international legality and UN resolutions." "It is important that we move forward towards resolving the Palestine-Israeli conflict. East Jerusalem is the capital of the Palestinian state. That is a fact, that is a reality," stressed Al Safadi.
He said that Jordan has called for an emergency ministerial meeting of the Arab League to convene in Cairo on Saturday and an Islamic summit is expected to take place in Turkey on Wednesday to discuss the issue.
