KUWAIT, 7th December, 2017 (WAM) -- The State of Kuwait has expressed "profound regret" over US President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and his plans to move the US embassy to the Holy City.

According to the Kuwait News Agency, KUNA, in a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that such a unilateral move contravenes the UN resolutions on maintaining the political, historical, legal and humanitarian status quo in Jerusalem.

"The US decision runs counter to the international laws and conventions, and puts in peril the future of the Middle East peace process," it said.

The statement also expressed concern over the adverse repercussions of the US move on security, peace and stability in the region, which is already fraught with peril.

It also voiced hope that the US administration would reconsider its move and focus on the peace efforts based on international legitimacy and a two-state vision, KUNA added.
