Syria's makeshift refineries to process precious crude
(MENAFN)Streams of crude oil are piped into a cylindrical tank to be refined, in the rebel-held town in Syria's northwest in order to curb a weeks-long odyssey from fields further east.
Nearly 100 makeshift refineries have emerged over the past two years around olive groves in Maarat Al Naasan, now a hub for processing precious "black gold" in Idlib province.
It was not easy to bring consumer products into the Islamist-controlled province; after Syria's war erupted six years ago cutting them off from government areas.
Not to mention that smuggling goods across the closed border from rebel-backer Turkey was not that cheap.
