ABU DHABI, 29th November, 2017 (WAM) -- A UAE newspaper has said that the Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, has been rendering stupendous service in Yemen, reflecting the UAE's keen desire to improve the living conditions of the population and help the brotherly Yemeni people build a promising future.
"As per latest figures, the UAE ranks as the top nation in the world in terms of providing relief assistance to Yemen," said The Gulf Today in an editorial on Wednesday.
The paper quoted Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, as saying at a recent seminar organised by the Emirates Diplomatic Academy that the UAE is in the core group of donors of ICRC, and "We appreciate their contributions, in particular to our Yemen operations."
"The first and foremost partner of the ICRC in the UAE," he noted, was the Emirates Red Crescent. "We appreciate their efforts within the UAE but also internationally."
The paper continued, "The ERC has launched several reconstruction projects and initiated academic and development schemes in many liberated governorates, besides social, economic and commercial projects that have financially benefitted families of martyrs and people with special needs.
"The ERC also worked closely with the World Health Organisation in the fight against the epidemic of cholera, which swept much of Yemen earlier in the year.
"Figures speak volumes about the extensive services rendered. One estimate suggests that UAE aid has reached as many as 10 million Yemenis, including four million children. Polio and measles vaccinations have been administered to around 488,000 children, including 130,000 infants under the age of one, and 358,000 children between the ages of one and five, in eleven of Yemen's governorates.
"The ERC on Monday dispersed school supplies to the children of Al Ghara Kindergarten in Ghail Bawazir, Hadramaut Governorate. The ERC supplied laptops, projectors and printers to the kindergarten.
"The ERC also distributed 2,500 food baskets to the people of the Hatib district in Shabwa, to ease the burden on local families, in light of the harsh economic conditions witnessed by the country as a result of Houthi militias' attacks.
"It is the common people that will suffer most when proper medical facilities are not available. Keeping this in mind, the UAE has extended help for the repair and rebuilding of health facilities, such as the Republican Hospital, the largest and one of the most important health services in the southern port city of Aden.
"There is no doubt the Yemeni people will forever remember the valuable contributions made by the UAE, through the ERC," concluded the Sharjah-based daily.
