UN envoy calls on int'al coalition to continue efforts against IS in Iraq

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, Nov 23 (KUNA) -- The head of the UN mission in Iraq, Jan Kubis, called the international coalition to continue military and civilian efforts to help Iraq to ensure security and stability as well achieving victory against the so-called Islamic State Organization.

This came during the Security Council session Wednesday evening to discuss the UN Secretary General special representative to Iraq Jan Kubis report on the progress of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

The Iraqi security forces on Nov 17 regained control on the last provinces that were under "Daesh" (so-called Islamic state IS) in Iraq, Jan Kubis said.

The military operations had killed and wounded thousands of militants and civilians as entire cities were destroyed and some six million people displaced from their homes, he added.

"Daesh organization has killed and enslaved thousands of Muslims, especially women and girls, as war crimes and crimes against humanity," Kubis said.

On the referendum of the Kurdistan region, Kubis said all outstanding issues between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government must be resolved through positive dialogue between them leading to the achievement of permanent solutions based on the constitution and also included all the constitutional rights of the Kurdistan region of Iraq and its inhabitants.
