Jordan turned Arab Spring into reforms, says House Speaker

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Nov. 21 (Petra) -- Speaker of the Lower House, Atif Tarawneh, on Tuesday said that Jordan managed to transform the so-called Arab Spring into a march of reforms, while some Arab countries witnessed destruction, bloodshed and war.

Welcoming a delegation from the National Defense College of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Tarawneh reviewed reforms carried out by the Kingdom at the different political, socio-economic and administrative levels.

Also, he spoke about the parliamentary life in Jordan over the past decades, as well as the relation between the legislative and executive powers and the Lower House' s legislative and oversight role.

Tarawneh also said the legislature has an effective presence among various global and regional parliamentary organizations.

"Jordan was able to communicate the Kingdom's vision towards various national and pan-Arab issues, particularly the Palestinian cause, thanks to the wisdom and leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II", he added.

Further, he pointed out problems facing Jordan, especially the economy, the repercussions of Mideast crises and waves of refugees which the Kingdom hosts.

However, the Kingdom bears heavy socio-economic and security burdens, the global community has not delivered on the obligations and duties under international law, Tarawneh said.

Head of the visiting delegation, Brigadier Khalid Al Qattan, commended the role of Jordan's lower house in the national reform march. He also lauded Jordanian-UAE ties as historic and deep-rooted based on mutual respect and benefits to serve the people of both countries.

The delegation also appreciated Jordan's vital role towards various national and Arab issues.
