Global leaders in law are set to meet in Doha for the third Qatar Law Forum today and tomorrow to discuss the global commitment to the rule of law, with this year's Forum focusing on United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
Leading the Forum are H E Dr Ali bin Fetais Al Marri, Attorney General of the State of Qatar and President of the Board of Trustees of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Centre (ROLACC) and Rt. Hon Lord Phillips, President of the Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Centre (QICDRC).
Organised by QICDRC and ROLACC, 2017 marks the third Qatar Law Forum following previous successful events in 2009 and 2012. The Qatar Law Forum has proved unique in its ability to bring together global legal leaders to debate the nature and practicalities of the rule of law. Delegates attending the Forum this year hail from over 60 countries, representing both the developing and developed world.
An outstanding feature of the Qatar Law Forum is not only the diversity of nationalities represented, but also the exceptional calibre of attendees. Each is a leader in law in their field and the 250 delegates represent the apex of the legal profession including serving Presidents, Chief Justices and Chief Prosecutors of international courts and tribunals. Over two days there will be five plenary sessions all linked to the rule of law and Goal 16: combating corruption; protecting and enabling displaced persons; modern day slavery; effective judicial institutions (tackling delay and access justice); and financial inclusion.
Dr Al Marri stated: 'The Qatar Law Forum 2017 will provide an unrivalled platform to debate the global commitment to the rule of law and at this time of world-wide uncertainty and insecurity, constructive international dialogue is as critical as ever. The hosting of this global forum in Doha is a fine example of Qatar's commitment to the rule of law and its willingness to lead the rule of law debate in the region.
The seniority of participants coupled with the universal relevance of the debate to all nations makes the Qatar Law Forum 2017 an outstanding event in the international legal calendar according to the Rt. Hon Lord Phillips, who said: 'With so many leaders of the international legal community attending the Forum, there is an opportunity to make a real contribution towards UN Sustainable Development Goal 16 by addressing its relationship to current global problems and identifying practical steps towards its achievement.
