AMMAN — The government on Sunday officially announced a landmark national project to establish a new city outside Amman in a bid to find drastic solutions to rising population density and traffic congestions in Amman and Zarqa in addition to providing affordable housing.

The "New City" will be built near Madhona region (some 30km east of Amman) in a strategic location on international highways linking the Kingdom with Saudi Arabia and Iraq. The new project, which will be known as "The New City Project", will be carried out through the public-private partnership (PPP) model of "build, operate and transfer".

The government indicated that the scheme will not be an extension to Amman or Zarqa whose populations are expected to reach 10 million by 2050. The mega venture is part of a larger government drive to stimulate the economy and lure in long-term investments.

The first phase of the project will be built on a 39-square-kilometer plot of land or 10 per cent of the total size and will be ready by 2030 while the whole project will be completed by 2050.

The government pointed out that the five-phase project will be built on a wholly-owned public land and surrounded by public land as well. It added that state institutions and ministries will be moved to the new city throughout the project various stages.

The project will highly invest in clean and renewable sources of energy and water treatment in addition to modern transport system that will link it with Amman and Zarqa. The architectural style of the new city will reflect Jordan's civilization and history, the government said, adding that the new city will be mainly designed to create business-friendly and sustainable environment.

The project is expected to attract private sector investors and local and international banks and financing institutions. The first phase will see the government drawing up schemes and floating execution tenders as of mid next year.

The new city will provide affordable housing units and will include public gardens, leisure and green spaces and tourist attractions. The government said it will launch a dedicated website to allow citizens to express their ideas, expectations and aspirations with regards to the "New City Project".
