John Kelly: Civil War is a result of inability to compromise

(MENAFN) John Kelly, White House chief of staff, discussed on Monday the US history pieces that were good, and not so good. He had admired Confederate general Robert E. Lee, but dedicated the starting point of the American Civil War to a "lack of an ability to compromise."

Kelly believes that history is "evolving" and that it's "dangerous" to not be aware of the fact. During his interview with Fox News, he was questioned about the removal of historical but controversial statues commemorating Confederate figures, he stated the following"

"There will be, 100 or 200 years from now, people that criticize us for what we do, and I guess they'll tear down, you know, statues of people that we revere today, it's dangerous, I think. ... It's just very, very dangerous and it shows you what, how much of a lack of appreciation of history and what history is."

John Kelly described Lee as "an honorable man" who has chosen the path of duty to his state rather than devotion to a federal government. Kelly added "it was always loyalty to state first back in those days, now, it's different today."
