French embassy launches paper recycling initiative

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The French embassy in Doha, in collaboration with the Al Wakrah Municipality, has launched a paper and cardboard recycling initiative at the ambassador's residence to mark the 2nd edition of Qatar Sustainability Week scheduled from October 28 to November 4.
Speaking to Gulf Times, French ambassador Eric Chevallier said the move forms part of their efforts to contribute in protecting and preserving the environment.
'This is one element on the fight against climate change, he explained, while pointing out that France is heavily involved in the fight against global warming, citing the 2015 Paris climate accord, which is close to its second anniversary.
The embassy is also 'extremely happy and pleased after Qatar fully ratified and involved itself in the dynamics of the global agreement, according to Chevallier.
After organising a large cleaning campaign at Al Wakrah beach last year, the embassy wants to pursue its partnership with the Al Wakrah Municipality by continuously contributing to the week-long event and taking part in environmental activities this year.
Chevallier said Al Wakrah Municipality was among the 200 cities in the world and the first one in the Middle East to be included in the list of Unesco's Global Network of Learning Cities.
'This is why we really wanted to have this event also with our friends from Al Wakrah Municipality, the Commission and the Council, and within the framework of course of the actions undertaken by the Minister of Municipality and Environment HE Dr Mohamed bin Abdullah al-Rumaihi, he pointed out.
The event at the embassy was attended by Al Wakrah Municipality director Mansour al-Boenain, Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science secretary-general Dr Hamda al-Sulaiti, Qatar Green Building Council director Meshaal al-Shamari, doctors Rupert Maclean and Leone Wheeler from the Unesco Global Network of Learning Cities, and Elite Paper Recycling vice president Abdulla Ibrahim al-Suwaidi.
While underscoring the importance of acting at the global level as France did for this Paris agreement, he also stressed the value of working on a daily basis since 'recycling is one of the elements that everybody can undertake.
