Italy disappointed by Russian veto over chemical weapon inquiry

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ROME, Oct 25 (KUNA) -- Italy expressed on Wednesday disappointment over a veto used by Russia in a UN Security Council session on a draft resolution to extend a joint investigation on chemical weapons in Syria.
Italian Permeant Representative to UN Ambassador Sebastiano Cardi told media outlets that his country is disappointed for not approving the draft resolution to extend a joint investigative mechanism between the UN and the OPAC on chemical weapons in Syria.
The text, drawn up by the US and co-sponsored by Italy, received 11 'yes' votes, two abstentions including by China and two 'no' ones, including Russia's veto.
The mandate of the team of experts will expire on November 18.
The US wanted to extend it by a year, while Russia for the voting to be postponed until November 7.
Russia has often cast doubt on the work done by the team of experts on the chemical attacks in Syria and wanted to wait until after the October 26 release of a report on the Khan Sheikoun attack in April, which killed over 90 people, before making a decision on the matter. (end) mn.mb
