Regime raid kills 15 civilians in eastern Syria

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) DEIZ EZ-ZOR, Syria: At least 15 civilians were killed and dozens of others injured in a Syrian regime airstrike in the eastern province of Deir Ez-Zor late Monday, according to a local source.

The raid mistakenly targeted a residential building in the regime-held Al Qusour neighborhood, close to IS-held areas in the province, the source said on condition of anonymity due to security concerns.

According to the source, regime forces cordoned off the building, declaring it off limits.

In September, more than 120 civilians were killed in airstrikes by Syrian and Russian warplanes on IS-held areas in Deir Ez-Zor.

Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011, when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and more than 10 million displaced, according to UN officials.
