Int'l Islamic News Agency names Essa Khairi as DG


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) JEDDAH, Oct 14 (KUNA) -- Members of the Executive Council of the International Islamic News Agency (IINA) approved Saturday appointment of Essa Khairi, of Djibouti, as IINA Director General as well as the 2025 media projects.

The members also agreed to support a plan of action of the national news agencies of member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), as well as their role to confront terrorism and Islamophobia.

IINA is the OIC's media tool.

Saudi Minister of Culture and Information Awwad Al-Awwad, in remarks at the beginning of the meeting, said Islamic countries were suffering from terrorism and extremism amidst growing influence of militias, which have foreign agendas.

Al-Awwad, also chairmane of IINA Executive Council, said "our media should show commitment towards issues of the Muslim nation." He said media in Muslim countries should join hands against terrorism, extremism and hatred.

OIC Secretary General Dr. Yusuf Al-Othaimeen totally realized that the Palestinian cause, extremism and terrorism, poverty and armed conflicts were threatening international peace and stability.

He said the OIC believed in the importance of media and diplomacy in the face of challenges.

The OIC has adopted a strategy aimed at highlighting the Palestinian cause, shedding further light on violations committed by the Israeli occupation as well as emphasizing the moderation of Islam, he said.

The meeting was attended by officials from Saudi Arabia, Palestine, OIC, Yemen, Egypt, Bahrain, Mali, Senegal, Niger, Turkey and Pakistan. (end) nh.bs
