Air Berlin jet overshoots runway on North Sea island no injuries

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) An Air Berlin jet with 87 people on board overran the runway on the German North Sea island of Sylt and ended Saturday's flight in the grass.

None of the 82 passengers and five crew members travelling on the Airbus A320 from Dusseldorf to the popular tourist destination were injured, the airline said.

The Federal Aviation Office was investigating the cause of the accident, which took place in bad weather.

Pictures posted on social media showed poor visibility in the area around the airport and a wet runway.

‘We are glad that it wasn't worse,' fire chief Wolfgang Kloth told dpa.

The plane has sunk into the wet soil, and heavy equipment will need to be brought in to remove it.
