Beaches in Phuket closed due to heavy rain
(MENAFN- Gulf Times) All beaches in Thailand's southern resort city of Phuket have been closed until further notice due to heavy rainfall, strong winds and high tidal waves, officials said on Thursday.
Swimming has been banned since earlyThursday at 10beaches, with red flags barring people from swimming, according to Phuket Lifeguard Service.
Phuket, 840 kilometres south of Bangkok, is an island on the Andaman coast popular among expatriates and tourists. The Phuket International Airport welcomed over 7.5mn people last year.
Thailand is currently in the monsoon season. The meteorological department on Thursday forecast heavy rains to continueuntil Tuesday.
Boatowners have been warned against leaving shores as tides in the Andaman Sea are as high as 2-3 metres. Many parts of Phuket have been flooded, but no casualties have been reported.
