Oman- Rugby: MRFC begins title defence in style

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Defending Gulf Conference champion Muscat Rugby Football Club (MRFC) launched its title defence in style as it steamrolled UAE Shaheen 53-0 in the opening match of the new season in Dubai, UAE, on Friday.

It was total domination of MRFC as it cantered to an easy win.

Forwards Macdara O'Ciardha and Jonathan Young and Gareth Osborne in the back stole the limelight in the lop-sided game.

Team captain Joey Maniel was happy with the result.

'We went to the UAE knowing that Shaheen would give 110 per cent and we weren't disappointed. They gave it their all but by the time the final whistle went Muscat had shown the resolve, commitment and the level of fitness we have trained for. I'm very happy to be defending the championship with such a strong start,' he said.

Maniel complemented the team's supporters for helping them organise a comprehensive pre-season training programme that paid dividends on the field.

MRFC will next take on Bahrain in its next fixture in two weeks' time and will hope to continue with its winning ways.
