Azerbaijan is one of the few Muslim countries that have robust mutual relationship with Israel.

The Israel-Azerbaijan partnership is not only based on political, economic and energy cooperation, but also two nations share cultural ties, due to a fact that a large Jewish community lives in Azerbaijan.

To deepen the humanitarian ties between the two countries, cities of Azerbaijan and Israel will fraternize.

Azerbaijan's Shamakhi and the Israeli Tirat-Carmel will become twin citieson September 5, said Lev Spivak, the directorgeneral of the International Association Azerbaijan-Israel (Aziz).

An Israeli delegation headed by Mayor of Tirat-Carmel Arieh Tal will visit Azerbaijan to sign an appropriate agreement with the Shamakhi city Executive Power.

The delegation will also include the deputy mayor, the director of the municipality, as well as the members of AzIz, Spivak told Report.az.

Soon Ismayilli and Israeli Kiryat Bialik also may sign an agreement on becoming twin cities.

For centuries, Shamakhi was one of Azerbaijan's most prominent cities, an important cultural and trading centre and the royal seat of the Shirvanshahs (9th to 18th centuries). Furthermore, it is known as the root of Azerbaijani literature.

Today, the city is well known for wine-making and carpet weaving. To meet craftsmen, weaving famous carpets such as "Shirvan", "Gobustan", "Shamakhi", "Israfil" and "Ardzhiman" tourists can visit village of Jangi.

Throughout the ages, Israeli city Tirat Carmel was controlled by many people, including the Romans, the Ottoman and the British. The city is built on the ruins of the town of al-Tira.

Tirat Carmelwas ruled by the Ottomans in late medieval and Renaissance times and was an agricultural area with wheat and goats and other farms. While conscription in the late 1800s harmed the town, it recovered, and by 1945 was an agricultural Muslim community with a Christian minority. The town was widely known for production of olives and almonds.
