Two Turkish soldiers killed in fighting with PKK
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Aug 26 (KUNA) -- Two Turkish soldiers were killed and nine others were wounded in armed clashes with gunmen of the Workers Party of Kurdistan (PKK) in southeastern Turkey over the past week, the military said on Saturday.
The Army Chairmanship of Staff said in a statement the regulars engaged in the clashes with the PKK gunmen in in the towns of Shernak, Diyar Bakr and Hekari.
The government forces seized large caches of arms including rocket launchers, explosives and hand-grenades, during the confrontations in the region.
The PKK, which advocates separation from Turkey to establish an independent Kurdish entity, resumed fighting the Turkish forces in July 2015 after suspension of military action that had lasted for three years and a half.
More than 1,250 Turkish personnel and civilians were killed in the renewed fighting. The Turkish troops killed more 10,000 PKK gunmen in Turkish border areas and northern Iraq in the latest bout of confrontation.
The PKK, led by the detained Abdullah Ocalan, advocates establishing a Kurdish state. Ankara has lambasted plans by the Kurds in Iraq to declare an independent state in September. (end) rs.rk
