Barshim extends Diamond League dominance

Qatar's world champion Mutaz Essa Barshim flew over 2.36metres to extend his dominance in the men's high jump at the penultimate edition of the IAAF Diamond League in Zurich, Switzerland yesterday.

The star athlete cleared the Gold medal winning height in his third attempt, after Majed Aldin Ghazal of Syria settled in for a silver medal with a 2.31 metre-effort.

Ukrain's Bohdan Bondarenko also had 2.31 metres in front of his name, but was awarded the bronze medal.

Great Britain's Mo Farah won a thrilling 5,000m in the final track race of his career yesterday. The 34-year-old, who has four Olympic titles, will concentrate on road races.

Chased down in the final 100 metres by Ethiopia's new world champion Muktar Edris, Farah won narrowly in a time of 13 minutes 06.05 seconds.

American Paul Chelimo was second as Edris, Farah's conqueror at London 2017, fell diving for the line.

Farah took gold in the 10,000m at the World Championships in London this month before losing his 5,000m crown, then won his final British track race in Birmingham.

'I wanted to win, and it is amazing that I have won, but it was hard work, said Farah. 'I will miss the track, the people, my fans.

'I have enjoyed running in stadiums for a lot of years, but now first of all I will enjoy being with my family.

In the men's 1500 metres, Timothy Cheruiyot (3:33.93), Silas Kiplagat (3:34.26) and Elijah Manangoi (3:34.65), all from Kenya, swept away all three podium spots.

Jamaica's Elaine Thompson lost to Shaunae Miller-Uibo of Bahamas (21.88) in the women's 200metres while the World Champion, Dafne Schippers of Netherlands missed a podium finish Another champion from the London worlds, Caster Semenya of South Africa clocked 1:55.84 in the women's 800m to bag the gold.
