Ex-Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif's wife Kulsoom Nawaz has been diagnosed with throat cancer. Officials said Nawaz's illness is curable.

The news of the cancer emerged days after she underwent medical tests in London.

Nawaz is scheduled to contest in a by-election in her husband's parliamentary seat next month.

Sharif resigned last month after being disqualified by the Supreme Court over a disproportionate assets case.

Reports: Cancer could be treated within 2-3 weeks
Fact

Nawaz's cancer is reportedly at an elementary stage and could be treated in two-to-three weeks. Nawaz will likely opt for chemotherapy over surgery, a report by Pakistani news organization Dawn suggested.

Nawaz's daughter Maryam is expected to handle the former's political campaign while she undergoes treatment.

Sharif originally indicated that his younger brother would run for the seat in the by-poll and subsequently for premiership.

However, it was then decided that Nawaz would stand for election while longtime Sharif loyalist Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was selected by the PML-N to become prime minister.
