Europeans see terrorism as main challenge


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Aug 2 (KUNA) -- Terrorism is now on top of the issues that European citizens when it comes to challenges that the EU is currently facing, according to a survey published by the European Commission Wednesday.

Immigration, which has been a top concern since the spring of 2015, is now the second biggest challenge, well ahead of the economic situation and unemployment in the EU, showed the Spring Eurobarometer.

One year after the UK referendum to leave the EU, an increasing majority of people in the EU are optimistic about the future of the bloc, it noted. Moreover, a majority of respondents, from eleven non-EU countries polled for the first time, say they have a positive view of the EU.

Meanwhile, 94 pecent in Brazil, 84 percent in China, 83 percent in India, 76 percent in Japan, 79 percent in Canada, 75 percent in the US, 67 percent in Australia and 54 percent in Turkey said they have a positive view of the EU.

Respondents in non-EU countries closer to the EU (Russia, Norway and Switzerland), however, tend to have mixed feelings, where only 43 to 46 percent think highly of the EU. (end) nk.nam
