AMMAN —AlGhad— The House of Representatives approved the government's bill to annul Article 308 of the amendment Penal Code, which frees rapists of responsibility towards their victims, if they agree to marry them. The Minister of Social Development, Hala Lattouf, stated today, Tuesday, that the House's decision to annul Article 308 is a step towards safeguarding our children, young girls, and families.
It is an achievement for Jordan, Lattouf said, and a significant milestone in the progress towards a better society.
Article 308, according to the Minister, allowed for the exploitation of women, especially underage girls and children.
That said, society is definitely going to do much better without it.
The House concludes debates on the amended penal code today, which will be transferred to the Appointed Senate for ratification.
A Royal Decree is expected soon, to adjourn the House of Representatives' first extraordinary session, with a number of unaddressed and pending amendments.
