Oman beach spikers claim silver in Arab Volleyball Championship

Oman B team, comprising Haitham al Shuraiqi and Ahmed al Hosni, went down to the Qatar A duo of Cherif Younousse Samba and Jefferson Santos Pereira in the final of the 25th Arab Beach Volleyball Championship that concluded in the Moroccan city of El Jadida on Saturday.

In the final, the Qatari pair, who are the defending Asian champions, overcame a tough first set from Shuraiqi and Hosni before winning 25-23, and then raced away to a title win with a 21-12 second-set victory. The Qatar A team recently returned after competing in the Rio Olympics.

The duo collected a prize money of US$1,000, while the Oman B pair received US$700. Oman had fielded two teams with the A team, comprising Badr al Subhi and Nooh al Jalboobi.

Subhi and Jalboobi finished fourth, losing the bronze medal playoff 0-2 (17-21, 15-21) to another Qatari team of Julio Cesar do Nascimento and Ahmed Tijan.

Tunisia came fifth, while hosts Morocco finished sixth. The women's title was won by Egypt. Sheikh Ali al Khalifa, the Arab Volleyball Confederation president, gave away the awards.

The next major assignment for Oman teams, coached by Khalifa al Jabri, will be the GCC Beach Volleyball Championship in Doha, Qatar from September 17.
