Doha: Qatar Charity (QC) has launched a programme to combat malaria for the benefit of 1,500 orphans and their parents in Niamey, Tillabéri and Dosso in Niger.

It was launched in the presence of the national coordinator for combating malaria in Niger, doctors and beneficiaries.

Mohamed Tahar Alssuibqi, Director, QC office in Niger, said all orphans underwent tests and treatment was provided to those with malaria, along with sterile mosquito net for all orphans and their parents.

Doctors held activities to raise awareness about malaria, its negative impact on employment and development, personal hygiene, the surrounding environment and how to use sterile mosquito net to prevent insect bites, especially mosquitoes that cause malaria.

Alssuibqi said QC";s priority is to take care of foster orphans and protect them from epidemic and infectious diseases, especially malaria, which is the primary cause of death of millions, especially children, in the country.

He said healthcare can help combat and cure malaria.

The coordinator of national program for combating malaria and representative of Niger government praised QC";s initiative, role in extending the scope of the programme, its stand alongside the government in implementing the national programme and thanked doctors who participated in the programme and the benefactors of Qatar.

QC has worked in Niger since the beginning of 2000 in partnership with local NGOs to alleviate the suffering of the rural population affected by drought, poverty and disease in Niger, which is in dire need of development according to the United Nations Development Index 2013.

QC sponsors orphans and their families and provide psychological, health, educational and social support. It provides orphans in some countries with centres for housing, education, vocational training and rehabilitation so that orphans are able to continue their lives on their own. Bangladesh is one of the countries where QC has such centres.

Out of its keenness to serve the largest number of orphans, QC has launched international initiative 'Rufaqa” to sponsor orphans around the world. Rufaqa provides development projects for children and orphans and help their families lead a decent life.
