Rome, Dhu-AlQa'dah 17, 1437, Aug 20, 2016, SPA -- The bodies of five refugees, including two young Syrian girls, had arrived along with hundreds of shipwreck survivors in the
Italian city of Trapani on Saturday, the Italian Red Cross reported, dpa reported.
The 8-month-old baby and a 5-year-old had died after their small wooden boat capsized off the Libyan coast earlier in the week.
According to the 21 survivors, the boat originally had 27 people on board before it capsized. They were transferred to a rescue vessel run jointly by the Malta-based MOAS and the Italian Red Cross.
The rescue boat crew had found four of the bodies while on the way to another bailout, according to the release. The fifth body had been found by a fishing boat, while a sixth body remains missing.
The plight of Syrian children has been in the spotlight recently when the photo of a wounded 5-year-old boy, covered in dust and blood, in the Syrian city of Aleppo was widely circulated on social media.
