Al Qaeda claims responsibility for Algeria's gas plant attack


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ALGIERS March 18 (KUNA) -- Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has claimed responsibility for the attack that targeted a gas installation in Algeria's desert on Friday.The remote facility located about 875 kilometers south of the capital is being operated by Algeria's Sonatrach British BP PLC and Norway's Statoil.In a statement relayed by the Algerian media AQIM said it carried out the attack.The "terrorist" attempt had no impact on the installation or the production a statement by Sonatrach said calling it a "failure." Two homemade rocket shells fell near the security post at the production site the Defense Ministry said.It added in a statement that the Algerian army scuttled the "attempted terrorist attack" and immediately surrounded the zone.
